HEDGES & TOPIARIES

Formal & Informal Hedge Trimming

The difference between formal and informal hedge trimming is how tightly they are trimmed.

Formal hedges are maintained so they appear very neat and require regular trimming to keep their formal look. Informal hedges have a more natural shape and may only need trimming once every year or two.

Both styles of trimming define boundaries within your garden and provide screening for privacy or create interest in your garden design.

    Formal Hedge Trimming

The visual impact of formal hedging is their sharp edges and sleek geometric lines, but they must be regularly maintained to keep them looking good. Strive to have your hedge under a metre in width at the top, so it can be maintained from your side of the fence.

Depending on growth rates, your formal hedge may need trimming three to four times per year. During growing season (through Spring and Summer), your hedging may need to be trimmed every six to eight weeks.

Regular trimming promotes new growth and helps to achieve a thicker, denser hedge.

    Informal Hedge Trimming

Informal hedges create a softer look in your garden, even though they may still be dividing a space, blocking a view or providing privacy. Informal hedges need infrequent pruning once they’re established and suit informal garden designs.

Trimming may be required after flowering to restrict the height or width of your hedge.
