Watering

Watering requirements for your lawn will vary throughout the year, depending upon seasons and recent rainfall. Factors that vary each lawn’s watering requirement include soil type, sunlight and climate.

On average most lawns need between 25-30mm of water per week to stay looking lush and green, with water coming from rainfall or irrigation. When watering your lawn with sprinklers, you can calculate the required watering time with the aid of a bucket. Place an empty bucket on the lawn area and time how long it takes to have 10-15mm of water accumulate in the bottom of the bucket. This simple test will let you know how long to run your sprinklers when watering your lawn in the future.

The best way to know if your lawn needs water is to monitor carefully and wait until the leaves of your lawn begin to discolour or wilt. As a guide for how often to be watering your lawn generally throughout the year, in Winter little to no watering (only if long dry spells), Spring and Autumn more regular watering and during summer water two-three times per week in the early morning or evening. Avoid watering during the heat of the day to minimise water loss through evaporation.

Do not water every day, because your lawn will develop a shallow root system and become more susceptible to drought and high temperatures.
