Lawn mowing

Lawn Mowing Explained

The mowing height should be adjusted throughout the year and during summer months your lawn should be cut higher.

Taller grass shades the soil, slows water evaporation and prevents weed growth.

In most lawn varieties the depth of the root system underground is the same as the height of the grass above ground, so taller grass will help to develop a deeper root system.

Regularity Of Lawn Mowing

Having your lawn mowed regularly will have your grass looking neat, even and have an orderly appearance. The secondary benefit is the removal of accumulated leaves and debris during mowing will allow your lawn receive maximum sunlight to help your lawn with photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis is the process where plants convert light, carbon dioxide and water into their own food, releasing oxygen as a by-product.

When grass is cut at the ideal height, shoots will re-grow and proliferate the fastest. This will thicken your lawn and have it look more even throughout.

Timing is also important with mowing, as no more than one third of the grass height should be removed in a single cutting. Having your lawn cut too short exposes soil, allows weeds to grow and will have your grass vulnerable to disease and infestation. If your lawn is consistently cut too short, the root system won’t develop properly, making your lawn too sensitive to drought or high temperatures. Short lawns with a shallow root system also need more water to stay healthy.

Mowing In Shady Areas

Lawns in shaded areas will look better if they are mowed higher.

Light is one of the key components in photosynthesis, taller grass has longer leaves and a greater surface area for being able to receive the maximum available sunlight.

Mulch-Mowing

Recycling grass cuttings through mulching can provide up to 25 percent of your lawn’s fertiliser needs. Mulch-mowing is done with a special attachment on the lawn mower, which cuts clippings again and again so they become very small. Grass cuttings contain over 80%water, so they decompose quickly and return nutrients such as nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus back to the soil.

No more than one third of the lawn height should be removed for effective mulch-mowing. During summer months in fast-growing season the grass may be too long to mulch-mow with each cut. If too many cuttings are produced they may not break down fully before the next lawn mow is due. At other times of the year it’s recommended to mulch-mow every 2nd or 3rd cut to help your lawn with natural fertilising.

Mowing Patterns

To stop the wheel marks from the mower forming ruts in your lawn, we change the direction of mowing during subsequent visits as required.

Mowing in the opposite direction helps to stop the soil from being compacted and creating permanent grooves in your lawn.
